South Hills Village Mall

From the Ground Up

South Hills Village Shopping Mall, built in the 1960's, was the first "from the ground up" enclosed shopping center in the Pittsburgh area. In 1992, the new owners started phase 1 of two projects to completely refurbish the Mall. Lighthouse Electric was selected as the electrical contractor.

The South Hills Village project involved the installation of not only new distributed power, but also new redundant feeds for the power utility.

The project was particularly challenging as the entire mall common space was gutted and rebuilt while the retail operation continued. Even though much of the heavy construction work was done faster during normal business hours, the public had to be separated from the spaces being demolished. To accommodate this requirement, scaffolding was built above all of the walkways to create a separate area for the public. Lighthouse installed temporary lighting to a level that would make the covered areas safe.
